WHY CAN'T WE BE GOOD?

Jacob Needleman

WHY CAN'T WE TALK?
Christian Wisdom on Dialogue as a Habit of the Heart
John Backman Foreword by Kay Lindahl

“Anything could happen when we start to talk. Nothing will happen if we don't. That alone makes the way of dialogue a journey worth taking.”
—from the Epilogue

Think of an issue that makes your blood boil. Now imagine lunch with a friend who is just as passionate about it—on the other side. How can the two of you even broach the issue, let alone hear each other with curiosity and compassion?

The answer begins long before the lunch does, by learning to engage dialogue as a habit of the heart—an inner transformation that the ancient practices of Christian spirituality can address. This highly readable and timely guide to restoring dialogue shows you how to cultivate this transformation while preparing you to approach your adversaries with curiosity, civility and compassion. With dialogue expert John Backman leading the way, you will:

· Examine the obstacles that keep you from dialogue:
black-and-white thinking, a “distraction lifestyle,” the fear of
change and negative impressions from others.
· Explore the strength of character from which healthy dialogue
springs—and the work of the soul that cultivates them.
· Learn practical guidelines for dialogue and how they work in an
imperfect world.
· Encounter anecdotes of dialogue in action, from resolutions of
interpersonal conflict to difficult dialogues on some of the most
divisive issues of our age.
· Use provocative questions at the end of each chapter to stimulate group discussion and individual reflection.

WINDOW OF THE SOUL
The Kabbalah of Rabbi Isaac Luria
James David Dunn

In this deep and powerful book, the Kabbalah of Rabbi Isaac Luria (1534-1572) is translated from the original passages of Hebrew. These luminous and sacred passages reveal the most profound teachings of the understanding of God and of our universe, inspired by the truth of the Torah. Some 400 years before Albert Einstein proposed his Theory of Relativity of the outer universe to the scientific community, Luria disclosed to his students his theory of the inner universe and its evolution within the mind of the Ineffable.

Seventy-seven years after the exile from Spain of the Jewish people, in a small settlement in upper Galilee called Safed, Isaac Luria was to answer not only the Jewish people's deepest questions of exile and homelessness, but to explain the inner worlds of the spirit and of their evolution that led to the ultimate birth of our cosmos. It is this evolution that reflects the origin and history of souls, according to the teachings of Rabbi Luria.

Whether we are the result of cosmic intention or accident, God has connected us to these answers and to the drama of creation that has made us. Window of the Soul is the first and only comprehensive selection of Isaac Luria's teachings from the original passages of Hebrew. It is beautifully written, it is original Kabbalah, and it opens doors in the human heart that have been locked for thousands of years.

WINTER £15.99
WINTER
A Spiritual Biography of the Season
Edited by Gary Schmidt and Susan M. Felch

For many winter is a time of postponed activity-and of shovelling snow navigating ice and trying to keep warm. What can easily be forgotten in winter's cold and occasional dreariness is that it can also be a time of shoring up of purity praise delight and play. In thirty stirring pieces-from translated Sanskrit and Hebrew poems to Henry David Thoreau and Basho Jane Kenyon John Updike Kathleen Norris and Annie Dillard-we share in the recognition of winter's hardships and celebrate the glory of winter as a spiritual gift-a quiet time in the rhythm of life a time of thoughtfulness of looking forward and of unexpected hope. Examining our retreat and hibernation from the world and our ultimate breaking free from icy paralysis these inspiring selections help us express and understand our own personal reaction to wintertime. They show us the way from the cold of this season to the warmth of the human soul. This outstanding anthology features top-flight nature and spirituality writers on the fierce inexorable season of winter. This is not the place to seek warm fuzzy odes to sleigh rides and hot cider though those images do appear occasionally. Rather these authors speak to the brutal barrenness of winter its frozen tundra a witness to the manner in which spirituality requires dormant seemingly infertile periods before bursting into life. - Starred review from Publishers Weekly

WISDOM AND WHERE TO FIND IT £6.99
WISDOM AND WHERE TO FIND IT
A Book of Truth
Barry Long

This short book of five chapters deals with some basic questions: What is truth? Why does mankind suffer? Do we really have control over our lives? Is there an absolute 'good'?

A training in self-observation.
Untangles basic moral issues.
Insight into self-realisation.

An excellent guide to where philosophy ends and the spirit takes over.

In this book Barry Long speaks to people in search of self-knowledge and provides the reflection of truth essential, but so hard to find in this world.

Why am I alive? What is of real value? When the world no longer holds the answers we turn within ourselves and question conventional wisdom. The challenge then is to find the truth.

There are five chapters, each based on a talk in which Barry Long addresses fundamental questions about the purpose and meaning of life. The talks were given when the author first declared himself a spiritual teacher in 1968 and spring from his experience of 'the mystic death' which he had undergone in India a couple of years earlier.

So this book could be seen as the starting point in Barry Long's work. But it is far from elementary. In fact it poses questions that philosophers, theologians and sages have wrestled with over the ages. But here some of the same fundamental issues are handled with all the clarity of someone who has just 'seen the light'. They are expressed concisely, simply and the implications are immediately thrown into sharp focus so that it is difficult to reduce them to ethical niceties. There is no room for ambiguity or debate. The challenge is to find the solution in self-observation alone, not in handed-down religious or philosophical concepts. This is the basis of Barry Long's way of teaching self-knowledge, which is founded in his own self-observation. In fact the book offers an exceptional view and example of the lack of compromise that self-realisation requires.

The five chapters are:
The Mystic Death / The Problem of Choice / Why Man Must Suffer /
What Man Must Do / Observation and Meditation.

The last chapter is a good outline of the basic practice which is one of the foundation-stones of Barry Long's teaching.

'When we talk of wisdom, the wisdom of Solomon, the wisdom of men, we speak of a wisdom invariably related to objects outside ourselves. That unfortunately is not real wisdom. . . because the real wisdom, the wisdom that sleeps with you, worries with you, pines with you, weeps and laughs with you, is the wisdom of self-knowledge. This is the only real wisdom.'
