AFTERSHOCK £12.99
AFTERSHOCK
Confronting Trauma in a Violent World A Guide for Activists and Their Allies
Pattrice Jones

AFTERSHOCK is about the real war against terror—the struggle for a world in which nobody lives in fear of atrocities perpetrated by human beings. Every day, people who push against violence and injustice or pull for peace and freedom must face their own fears. Many activists also must struggle with "aftershock," the physical and emotional reverberations of frightening, horrifying, or otherwise traumatizing experiences endured in the course of their activism. This book is for aftershocked activists and their allies, as well as for people and organizations that practice high-risk activism. It includes practical tips for individuals, organizations, and communities, as well as information about how traumatic events affect our bodies and abilities. AFTERSHOCK explores the culture of trauma that people have created through our violent exploitation of the Earth, other animals, and one another. As long as we continue to perpetrate such violations, we will never fully heal our own traumatic injuries. This book, therefore, is for survivors of all kinds of trauma, for therapists who treat trauma, and for anyone who hopes to reduce the amount of terror in the world.

ASLEEP AT THE GEIGER COUNTER £14.99
ASLEEP AT THE GEIGER COUNTER
Nuclear Destruction of the Planet and How to Stop It
Sidney Goodman

ASLEEP AT THE GEIGER COUNTER vigorously exposes the destructive sweep of nuclear scams and frauds. It documents why nuclear programmes mean cancer everywhere, birth defects forever, the uncontrolled proliferation of nuclear weapons, increased chance of nuclear war, the undermining of our national defence, the loss of civil liberties and unending billions in subsidies which have been bleeding us dry, while actually delaying genuine energy independence.

Responsible energy policies can give us a golden age of environmental and economic benefits, a more peaceful world and conditions which will help rich and poor alike. We are getting the opposite of all that, sanctimoniously shrouded with a cloak of big lies. Some of those lies are so brazen, they violate the most basic laws of physics and engineering.

The book is written by an engineer who has been on the front line of varied research design and development for 42 years and, also, on the front line of ardent environmental activism.

How the Largest Social Movement in History is Restoring Grace, Justice, and Beauty to the World
Paul Hawken

Paul Hawken has spent more than a decade researching organisations dedicated to restoring the environment and fostering social justice. From billion-dollar nonprofit organisations to single-person dot.causes, these groups collectively comprise the largest movement on earth, a movement that has no name, leader or location and that has gone largely ignored by politicians and the media. BLESSED UNREST explores the diversity of the movement, its brilliant ideas, innovative strategies and centuries of hidden history. A culmination of Hawken's many years of leadership in the environmental and social justice fields, it will inspire all who despair of the world's fate and its conclusions will surprise even those within the movement itself.

BLESSING NEXT TO THE WOUND £16.99
BLESSING NEXT TO THE WOUND
A Story of Art, Activism, and Transformation
Hector Aristizábal and Diane Lefer

Hector Aristizábal grew up in the barrios of Medellin, Colombia, where he and his siblings had to use all their wit, wiles and wherewithal to survive poverty, the ever-present allure of cheap drugs and very dangerous money and the endemic violence from left wing guerrillas, right wing death squads, cocaine cartels and the armed power of the State. As a young actor and psychology student, Hector was seized by the military, held in secret and tortured. He survived and went on to find meaning in his ordeal as he channeled his desire for revenge into nonviolent activism both in his homeland and during decades of exile in the United States.

While challenging the State-sponsored causes of much suffering in the world, Hector reached out to some of society's most marginalised - at-ris and incarcerated youth, immigrants and many others - using his theatrical skills and psychotherapeutic training to help people shape their own stories and identities. He sought to understand his own identity as well as that of one brother who was a revolutionary and another who was gay - and how his belief in personal integrity and political freedom might square with the realities of a country under the yoke of toxic ideologies. Hector was forced finally to examine his own motivations and commitments and begin to heal his own gaping wounds.

CHAOS POINT
The World at the Crossroads
Ervin Laszlo

Breakdown or Breakthrough? Seven Years to Avoid Global Collapse and Promote Worldwide Renewal. We are at a critical juncture in history, a "decision-window" where we face the danger of global collapse--or the opportunity for global renewal. Written by Ervin Laszlo, the founder of systems philosophy and general evolution theory, The Chaos Point provides a concise overview of the present world situation, showing where we are and how we got here. According to Laszlo, for the next six to seven years--roughly until the end of 2012-- we have the opportunity to head off trends that would lead to a critical tipping point. Beyond this "chaos point," we either evolve to a safer, more sustainable world, or the social, economic, and ecological systems that frame our life become overstressed and break down. The 2012 chaos point need not be the end of the world, but it will certainly be the end of the kind of world we have created. In today’s decision-window, we have a unique chance to break through to a new world. This pioneering book tells us what this new world can look like and how each of us can help to achieve it. The Chaos Point is a healing book. It not only identifies the nature of the malady every person and every society now suffers from, but offers a cure.

CONSCIENCE HB
The Duty to Obey and the Duty to Disobey
Rabbi Harold M Schulweis

At this critical moment in the world’s history, we are called sharply but lovingly to think in new ways about our moral and political behaviour by Harold Schulweis, one of America’s great spiritual leaders. Like the biblical prophets, he speaks to people of all faiths, all backgrounds in this call for renewal of conscience. “The urgent challenge for religion is to provide religious groups with the resources needed to resist immoral authority. Religion is morally obligated to instill the sanctity of conscience that may balance the culture of obedience with the culture of moral disobedience.… Organized religion appears unable to envision the interdependent coexistence of obedience and disobedience, a time to obey and a time to disobey.” A provocative book, it examines the idea of conscience and the role conscience plays in our relationships to law, ethics, religion, human nature and God - and to each other. From Abraham to Abu Ghraib, from the dissenting prophets to Darfur, he probes history, the Bible and the works of contemporary thinkers for ideas about both critical disobedience and uncritical obedience, illuminating the potential for evil and the potential for good that rests within us as individuals and as a society.

CURSE OF FUNDAMENTALISM
How Arrogance And Elitism Pollute Society
Robert R. Leichtman

Many people need to realise how often they allow some ideology to do their thinking for them. Very gradually fundamentalist ideas and beliefs have invaded their minds and hearts. Now they rarely think for themselves anymore on key issues. So writes author Robert R. Leichtman in this breakthrough book describing the curse of fundamentalism and how it poisons society with its arrogance and elitism. Dr. Leichtman reveals how fundamentalism dominates every segment of society--and what thinking people need to do in order to defeat it with their own thinking and in society as a whole.

DUMBEST GENERATION £21.00

DUMBEST GENERATION
How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future (Or, Don't Trust Anyone Under 30)
Mark Bauerlein

This shocking, lively exposure of the intellectual vacuity of today’s under thirty set reveals the disturbing and, ultimately, incontrovertible truth: cyberculture is turning us into a nation of know-nothings.

Can a nation continue to enjoy political and economic predominance if its citizens refuse to grow up?

For decades, concern has been brewing about the dumbed-down popular culture available to young people and the impact it has on their futures. At the dawn of the digital age, many believed they saw a hopeful answer: The Internet, e-mail, blogs, and interactive and hyper-realistic video games promised to yield a generation of sharper, more aware, and intellectually sophisticated children. The terms “information superhighway” and “knowledge economy” entered the lexicon, and we assumed that teens would use their knowledge and understanding of technology to set themselves apart as the vanguards of this new digital era.

That was the promise. But the enlightenment didn’t happen. The technology that was supposed to make young adults more astute, diversify their tastes, and improve their verbal skills has had the opposite effect. According to recent reports, most young people in the United States do not read literature, visit museums, or vote. They cannot explain basic scientific methods, recount basic American history, name their local political representatives, or locate Iraq or Israel on a map. The Dumbest Generation is a startling examination of the intellectual life of young adults and a timely warning of its consequences for American culture and democracy.

Drawing upon exhaustive research, personal anecdotes, and historical and social analysis, Mark Bauerline presents an uncompromisingly realistic portrait of the young American mind at this critical juncture, and lays out a compelling vision of how we might address its deficiencies.

EXPENSIVE WAY TO MAKE BAD PEOPLE WORSE £10.99
EXPENSIVE WAY TO MAKE BAD PEOPLE WORSE
An Essay on Prison Reform from an Insiders Perspective
Jens Soering

The United States has more people locked away in prison per capita than any other country. Prison building is a multi-billion-dollar industry and in some states more money is spent on prisons and prisoners than on education. Nearly one quarter of all prison inmates worldwide are housed in U.S. jails or penitentiaries even though the United States has only five percent of the world's population. Yet in spite of the vast amount of resources spent on locking people up and the number of people in prison the United States leads the developed world in the number of homicides and violent assaults. For the last eighteen years Jens Soering has experienced the inside of many different prison environments from a youth remand centre in London to America's notorious Supermax prisons to medium-security institutions. What he has seen and experienced has convinced him that not only do prisons not rehabilitate prisoners who may be useful for society once their sentence has ended but prisons turn petty criminals into hardened convicts - all at enormous expense to society. Meanwhile other nations control their crime rates at a fraction of the cost of the United States correctional system. Soering does not argue that prisons should not exist or dispute that there are people who need to be locked away. His book is not an indictment of the legal system that lands many people in prison. Instead AN EXPENSIVE WAY TO MAKE BAD PEOPLE WORSE offers a mainly monetary analysis of why it is absurd fiscal policy to lock people up so often and for so long.

FIVE ROADS TO THE FUTURE
Power in the Next Global Age
Paul Starobin

Veteran international correspondent Paul Starobin masterfully mixes fresh reportage with rigorous historical analysis to envision a world in which the United States is no longer the dominant superpower. Following an insightful study of America's global ascendency, Starobin provides the reasons for America's waning influence and explores five possible paths for the future, each of which is already in the making: A global chaos that could be dark or happy; a multipolar order of nation-states; a global Chinese imperium; an age of global city-states; or a universal civilization leading to world government. Starobin's tone is somber but in the end hopeful—the world after America need not be a disaster for America, and may even be liberating.

GREAT DIGITIZATION AND THE QUEST TO KNOW EVERYTHING £14.99
GREAT DIGITIZATION AND THE QUEST TO KNOW EVERYTHING

Lucien X. Polastron

The digitization of books is an immense blessing for the exchange and diffusion of knowledge, enabling access in even the most remote locations. Yet this new technology has awakened perils as dangerous as those that reduced libraries to ashes in ancient Alexandria and modern Nazi Germany. The very force that makes it possible for books to reach a global audience also has the power to hold them hostage and even destroy their integrity in a manner that is unprecedented. Author Lucien Polastron points out that the dematerialization of knowledge raises new legal challenges about the quality and authenticity of information. Attempts to create a virtual library are changing the very nature of reading, which has been marked by the act of physically holding and moving forward through an author's work rather than viewing a series a series of sound bite length snippets. The transfer of the traditional paper book into a searchable entity on a computer represents a revolution even more dramatic than the one triggered by Gutenberg's printing press. This revolution is akin to the replacement of the scroll by the codex, which likewise changed the way humans could receive information and structure their thoughts. Yet despite its broad easy access, the profiteers of this new commercial domain may render the very idea of 'free' reading obsolete. Polastron poses questions others are ignoring in a headlong rush to embrace what is still a very ambiguous future.

The Creation of the Worldwide Energy Web and the Redistribution of Power on Earth

LONGEST STRUGGLE £16.99
LONGEST STRUGGLE
Animal Advocacy from Pythagoras to PETA
Norm Phelps

From the first hominids who hunted wooly mammoths to today's factory farms and bio-engineering labs, LONGEST STRUGGLE tells the story of animal exploitation and the battle for animal justice. After describing the roots of animal rights in the ancient world, author Norm Phelps follows the development of animal protection through the Enlightenment, the anti-vivisection battles of the Victorian Era, and the birth of the modern animal rights movement with the publication of Peter Singer's Animal Liberation. In a brisk, readable narrative, LONGEST STRUGGLE traces the campaigns of animal rights pioneers like Henry Spira, Alex Hershaft, and Ingrid Newkirk, as well as leaders who have come more recently on the scene like Heidi Prescott, Karen Davis, and Bruce Friedrich. Always grounding his story in its historical setting, Phelps describes the counterattack that the animal abuse industries launched in the 1990s and analyzes the controversies that have roiled the movement almost from the beginning, including "national groups vs. grass roots," "abolitionists vs. new welfareists," and activists who favor arson and intimidation vs. those who support only peaceful, legal forms of protest. LONGEST STRUGGLE concludes with an overview of current campaigns and tactics, and an assessment of the state of the movement as we enter a new century, including the threat represented by an overzealous "war on terror". Thoroughly researched and annotated, LONGEST STRUGGLE reflects its author's two decades as an animal rights activist and his access to movement leaders who have shared with him their personal stories of campaigns that made animal rights history. At once an accessible history of animal protection thought and a revealing narrative of campaigns for animal rights, LONGEST STRUGGLE is must read material for everyone who wants to understand the most radical social justice movement of our time.

MUZZLING A MOVEMENT
The Effects of Anti-Terrorism Law, Money, and Politics on Animal Activism
Dara Lovitz

The ability to protest peacefully and to voice unpopular opinions without being arrested and imprisoned arbitrarily are cornerstones of the U.S. Constitution and are the reasons why, in spite of the many limitations imposed upon sectors of its society over the centuries, the dominant order has been forced to change to allow people of colour, women and others to take their place in society.

Animals raised for their flesh or body products, however, remain without even the most basic natural rights: to move around, to associate with their conspecifics, to breathe clean air, and to nest or wallow or graze. They have no choice but to rely, as do all non-human animals, on human beings to speak up for them and articulate those basic rights, as well as to challenge those who are either indifferent to, or actively complicit in harming, their welfare.

Since the passage of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) in 2006, however, the ability to document abuses, draw attention to the horrors, and raise public awareness about the suffering of animals in factory farms or scientific laboratories has been substantially curtailed. MUZZLING A MOVEMENT is an in-depth and tightly argued analysis of the case of the SHAC-7, the organization whose supposed activities ultimately led to the passage of the AETA. Lawyer Dara Lovitz reveals the history behind the AETA, examines the tendentious and speculative government case against the SHAC activists, and in so doing shows how the U.S. government has deeply compromised the freedom of speech and protest enshrined in the Constitution.

The Truth behind Death at Columbine
Brooks Brown and Rob Merritt

On April 20 1999 Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris two seniors at Columbine High School in Littleton Colorado walked into their school and shot to death twelve students and one teacher and wounded many others. It was the worst single act of murder at a school in U.S. history. Few people knew Dylan Klebold or Eric Harris better than Brooks Brown. Brown and Klebold were best friends in primary school and years later at Columbine Brown was privy to some of Harris and Klebold's darkest fantasies and most troubling revelations. After the shootings Brown was even accused by the police of having been in on the massacre - simply because he had been friends with the killers. Now for the first time Brown with journalist Rob Merritt gets to tell his full version of the story. He describes the warning signs that were missed or ignored and the evidence that was kept hidden from the public after the murders. He takes on those who say that rock music or video games caused Klebold and Harris to kill their classmates and explores what it might have been that pushed these two young men from supposedly stable families to harbour such violent and apocalyptic dreams. Shocking as well as inspirational and insightful NO EASY ANSWERS is an authentic wake-up call for all the psychologists authorities parents and law enforcement personnel who have attempted to understand the murders at Columbine High School. As the title suggests the book offers no easy answers but instead presents the unvarnished facts about growing up as an alienated teenager in America today.

SPECIESISM £15.99
SPECIESISM

Joan Dunayer

Defining speciesism as a failure in attitude or practice to accord any nonhuman being equal consideration and respect this brilliant work critiques speciesism both outside and inside the animal rights movement. Much moral philosophy legal theory and animal advocacy aimed at advancing nonhuman emancipation actually perpetuate speciesism the book demonstrates. Speciesism examines philosophy law and activism in terms of three categories: old speciesism new speciesism and species equality. Old-speciesists limit rights to humans. SPECIESISM refutes their standard arguments against nonhuman rights. Current law is old-speciesist; legally nonhumans have no rights. Animal laws such as the Humane Slaughter Act afford nonhumans no meaningful protection Dunayer shows. She also explains why welfare campaigns are old-speciesist. Instead of opposing the abuse or killing of nonhuman beings such campaigns seek only to make abuse or killing less cruel; they propose alternative ways of violating nonhumans' moral rights. New-speciesists espouse rights for only some nonhumans those whose minds seem most like humans'. In addition to devaluing most animals new-speciesists give greater moral consideration and stronger basic rights to humans than to any nonhumans. They see animal kind as a hierarchy with humans at the top. Dunayer explains why she categorizes such theorists as Peter Singer Tom Regan and Steven Wise as new-speciesists. Non-speciesists advocate rights for every sentient being. SPECIESISM makes the case that every creature with a nervous system should be regarded as sentient. The book provides compelling evidence of consciousness in animals often dismissed as insentient. Dunayer argues that every sentient being should possess basic legal rights including rights to life and liberty. Radically egalitarian SPECIESISM envisions non-speciesist thought law and action.
