JUNG THE MYSTIC
The Esoteric Dimensions of Carl Jung's Life and Teachings
Gary Lachman

Although he is often called the "founding father of the New Age," Carl Jung, the legendary Swiss psychiatrist best known for his groundbreaking concepts like the collective unconscious, archetype theory and synchronicity, often took pains to avoid any explicit association with mysticism or the occult. Yet Jung lived a life rich in paranormal experiences - arguing for the existence of poltergeists in a debate with Sigmund Freud, participating in séances, incorporating astrology into his therapeutic work, reporting a near death experience and collaborating with the pioneering ESP researcher, J. B. Rhine. It is these critical experiences - often fleetingly touched on in other biographies or critical studies and just as frequently used to make a case against Jung and his philosophies - that form the core of this exciting new biography, JUNG THE MYSTIC.

Lachman assesses Jung's life and work from the viewpoint of Western esoteric tradition and helpfully places Jung in the context of other major esoteric thinkers, such as Rudolf Steiner, G. I. Gurdjieff and Emanuel Swedenborg. In that respect, this new biography appeals directly to the sensibility of spiritual readers who rightly see Jung as a pioneer of today's contemporary metaphysical culture.

LIVE WITH MEANING. DIE WITH PASSION HB

Fumitada Naoe Photographs by Takashi Owaki

A philosophy for life is explored by Fumitada Naoe, a man who took himself from the depths of an Asian shanty town, through the bitter discrimination of a wholly homogenised society, to the heights of success in one of the world's most economically powerful nations. His philosophy for living, told through poetic essays and emotionally charged photography, isn't how to create wealth, but how to live one's life with love, passion and to the fullest. The strong messages and images in this book have been recognised by many young readers as an innovative self-development guide.

Born in a shanty town of Taiwan, Fumitada plunges in and makes his own way to success within Japan's affluent business sector. Determined to be the top entrepreneur in the world, he is propelled by the death of a loved one and to overcome the discrimination he has faced throughout his life. He starts his own company with virtually no experience or funds and builds it to a thirty million dollar business within in a year. Fumitada's musings are as inspiring as they are moving.

Twelve Women of Jerusalem

In the course of her many visits and of the five years she spent there as a resident Madsen became intimately familiar with the city she had loved at first sight. Yet as she came to know the women of Jerusalem - Muslims Jews and Christians - she wondered at their courage and persistence. Why do they stay here through war after war? she asked herself. How were these women able to maintain their vision their hope in the midst of perpetual conflict and danger? The result of her questioning is this primer for peace illustrated by the lives of twelve women who have made their homes and lives in this troubled and beloved city. The twelve women profiled in this book represent thousands of women who live and work every day in Jerusalem where without waiting for political negotiations to succeed they have found their own ways to make peace.

MARBLE ROOM £15.99
MARBLE ROOM
How I Lost God and Found Myself in Africa
Bill Hatcher

At 27, Bill Hatcher was at a crossroads. Brought up in an evangelical household in the American Bible Belt, his religion had provided no answers to his parents' broken marriage or, indeed, his own divorce. The key to his salvation would come from a most unlikely source: a flyer calling for Peace Corps volunteers. A year later, Hatcher finds himself in Tanzania, East Africa. As a geography teacher at an all-girls' boarding school, he's expected to broaden his students' horizons, but, instead, it is his own worldview that is challenged - by encounters with local shamans, dangerous ascents on Mounts Kenya, Kilimanjaro and Meru and especially a friendship with a Muslim student. Through tragedy and triumph, by questioning the very core of his being, he manages to escape the confines of his "marble room" and gain a new understanding of himself and God. Filled with breathtaking accounts of death-defying mountain climbs and the spectacular beauty of the African countryside, this memoir is both a tale of adventure and self-discovery - and proof that even the most naive and insular American can achieve a spiritual awakening.

MAY I BE HAPPY
A Memoir of Love, Yoga, and Changing My Mind
Cyndi Lee

In the candid, contemplative memoir MAY I BE HAPPY, revered yoga teacher Cyndi Lee gives readers an unforgettable gift: the ability to focus on our experiences as we have them, on the way to a lighter life.

For all her wisdom as a teacher, Cyndi Lee - founder of New York's world renowned OM yoga Centre - understood intuitively that she still had a lot to learn. In spite of her success in physically demanding professions - dancer, choreographer and yoga teacher - Lee was caught in a lifelong cycle of repetitive self-judgment about her body. Instead of the radical contentment expected in international yoga teachers, she realised that hating her body was a form of suffering, which was infecting her closest relationships - including her relationship with herself.

Inspired by the honesty and vulnerability of her students, Lee embarked on a journey of self-discovery that led her outward - from the sacred sites of the parched Indian countryside to the centre of the 2011 earthquake in Japan - and inward, to seek the counsel of wise women, friends and strangers both. Applying the ancient Buddhist practice of loving-kindness meditation to herself, Lee learned that compassion is the only antidote to hatred, thereby healing her heart and changing her mind.

With prose as agile as the yoga sequences she creates, MAY I BE HAPPY gives voice to Lee's belief that every life arises, abides and ultimately dissolves. By becoming her own best student, Lee internalises the strength, stability and clarity she imparts in her Buddhist-inspired yoga classes.

ME AND THE BIOSPHERES
A Memoir by the Inventor of Biosphere 2
John Allen

Anyone suffering from the Global Warming Blues will cherish this uplifting account of the most ambitious environmental experiment of our time: Biosphere 2, a miniature Earth under glass and the world's largest laboratory for global ecology. John Allen's memoir, ME AND THE BIOSPHERES is a rich and complex narrative, filled with rollicking adventure, exceptional camaraderie and mind-bending science.

Covering three acres of Arizona desert, Biosphere 2 contained five biomes: a 900,000-gallon ocean with coral reef, a rainforest, a savannah, a desert, a farm and a micro-city, all housed within an air-tight, sealed glass and steel frame structure. Eight people lived inside for two years (1991-1993) setting world records in human life-support, monitoring their impact on the environment, while providing crucial data for future manned missions into outer space.

Me and the Biospheres is an account of the singular life John Allen has led: his travels to Egypt, Vietnam, Nepal, Tibet and India, his meetings with people like Buckminster Fuller, William Burroughs, Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman. From building developments in Iran to adobe houses in New Mexico, from Harvard Business School to cafés in Tangiers, from board meetings in Fort Worth to mystical moments with Sufi sages, John Allen has impacted millions of people with manifest integrity. His humorous memoir is a tribute to the ingenuity and dauntlessness of the human mind.
